Shortest answer

Search for your destination in AMap using Chinese characters and show the driver the result screen. If you have no internet, save a screenshot of the address to your phone gallery before your ride. Do not use English place names — drivers cannot read them.

The AMap method: search and show the screen

This is the most reliable method. AMap is the navigation app that taxi drivers in Shanghai use themselves, so they understand it immediately.

  • Open AMap and type your destination name in Chinese characters in the search bar.
  • Tap the correct result from the list. A detail screen appears with the Chinese name, address, and map pin.
  • Show this screen to the driver. It gives them everything they need: the name, the address, and the exact location on the map.
  • If the driver wants navigation, they can start route planning directly from this screen.

This works for taxis, ride-hailing cars, and even asking strangers for directions. The key is to search in Chinese, not English.

The screenshot method: save before you go

If you are worried about losing connectivity mid-ride, or you do not want to fumble with an app in the car, saving a screenshot in advance is the simplest solution.

  • While you still have Wi-Fi, search for your destination in AMap.
  • Take a screenshot of the screen showing the Chinese name and address, and save it to your phone gallery.
  • When you get in the car, open your gallery and show the screenshot to the driver.
  • Screenshots work fully offline — no internet needed, no data used.

It is a good idea to screenshot all the places you plan to visit in the next few days, so you do not have to scramble later.

Why English place names fail

Many foreign visitors try to tell drivers their destination using English names — the English hotel name, the English attraction name, or the English address from Google Maps. This almost never works in Shanghai.

  • The vast majority of Shanghai taxi drivers do not speak English and cannot read English place names.
  • English and Chinese names are often not direct translations, and the pronunciations are completely different. "The Bund" and "外滩" are unrecognizable to each other.
  • A hotel's English brand name may not be recognizable to drivers at all. They know the Chinese name.
  • Even if you use a translation app to convert an English name to Chinese, the result may not match the actual place name.

The safest approach is to search in Chinese from the start. Do not go back and forth between English and Chinese.

What to do if you have no internet

Losing connectivity while hailing a taxi in Shanghai is common, especially in the stretch between a metro station exit and the street. Being prepared in advance prevents panic.

  • Save screenshots of your destinations while you still have Wi-Fi. This is the most reliable backup.
  • Ask your hotel front desk to write down the destination name and address in Chinese on paper.
  • If you are near a mall or office building, ask a staff member for the Chinese name and write it down.
  • Many metro stations have map screens where you can look up nearby destination names in Chinese.

As long as you have the Chinese address in some form — a screenshot, a text note, or a piece of paper — the driver can read it.
