Shortest answer

For 1 day, combine one classic landmark with one strong neighborhood. For 3 days, separate classic sights, neighborhood time, and a modern-city or waterfront day. Do not try to see everything at once.

If you only have 1 day

With only 1 day, the core rule is "one landmark plus one neighborhood." Do not waste time crossing the city.

  • Classic landmark (pick one): the Bund for skyline, Yu Garden for old city, Nanjing Road for the shopping corridor.
  • Neighborhood experience (pick one): French Concession for walking and coffee, Jing'an Temple area for shops, Julu Road for local food.

Visit one landmark in the morning, walk the neighborhood in the afternoon, eat nearby in the evening. Do not cross half the city to check off another site.

If you have 3 days

With 3 days you can separate Shanghai into three dimensions: classic, local, and modern.

  • Day 1 · Classic: Bund → Yu Garden → Nanjing Road pedestrian street. This is the most "tourist" day, but it is what first-time visitors need to see.
  • Day 2 · Neighborhood: French Concession walking → tree-lined streets → local cafés → a good local meal. This is the day that best captures daily life in Shanghai.
  • Day 3 · Modern: Lujiazui skyline → waterfront promenade → or pick a museum (Shanghai Museum,浦东 Art Museum). This is the most "big city" day.

Neighborhoods matter more than landmarks

Many people pack their itinerary with landmarks, but the memories that last usually come from neighborhood details: a quiet tree-lined street, a local shop with a queue, a courtyard where you can sit with coffee.

  • Landmarks give you "I was here" photos.
  • Neighborhoods give you "I understand this city" feelings.

If time is limited, skip one landmark and spend an extra hour walking a neighborhood.
