Check your entry type: visa vs transit exemption
China has different entry policies for different nationalities. The two most common paths are applying for a tourist visa and using the transit visa exemption. Figuring out which one applies to you is the first step.
- Tourist visa (L visa): if your itinerary does not fit the transit exemption rules, you need to apply at a Chinese embassy or visa center before departure.
- 240-hour transit visa exemption: available for travelers flying from country A through Shanghai to country B. You must hold a confirmed onward ticket and stay no longer than 240 hours.
- Some nationalities qualify for shorter visa-free stays. Check the official policy for your specific passport.
- Do not guess based on memory. Look up the latest official entry policy before your flight.
The transit exemption has strict conditions. If you do not meet them, you can be denied boarding or entry. This is not something you can negotiate at the airport.
